This kitchen was originally designed and installed by a cabinetmaker hired by the homeowner. We were hired to make it more user-friendly by replacing an eat-in bar with a large pantry cabinet, and adding a custom black island to store spices, house a wine chiller, and wine rack. One the opposite side, we built bookshelves for cookbooks. The pantry cabinet needed to blend in with the original cabinetry so that it looked as if it were always part of the kitchen. The island was purposely designed to be a contrast to the soft blue of the cabinets. It not only provides much needed preparation space to the homeowners, but also adds seating, storage, and visual interest. We topped it with a dark granite.
